Kid’s Bath Sneak Peek

Here’s one pre-new potty, but it shows what a gorgeous job my husband did on the tile floor. Can you believe working on this house was the first time he ever tiled? He’s a pro :)

And here’s one with … just in time to potty train my baby boy. Nothing like a brand new bathroom to make you want to put that off.

Oooh!! Isn’t she pretty? The knobs that were included are brushed nickel, so we got some oil rubbed bronze ones. If anyone has seen where we may have put them, please share!

Will she ever be this clean again? LOVE the shape of this sink!

Master Bath Sneak Peek

Everyone’s been working so incredibly hard and I’m so, so happy with how everything’s turning out! Our goal is to be done and moved in before school starts. My new kindergartener (kindergartner? Hmmm…sometimes spell check doesn’t seem quite right!) is VERY excited about taking the bus and I’d hate to have to drive her to the new house just for her to catch the bus. Fingers crossed!

When I bought these pedestal sinks on craigs * list, they came with the medicine cabinets you see above. At first I strongly disliked them and my hubby had plans to build some frames out of molding to take care of that for me. However, now that they’re up, I kind of like them. How about that! One job removed from the to do list :)

And is it weird that I really like how the toilet tank is super small and skinny? Cause I do.

In the works

I thought I’d share some of the projects that I’ve been working on…

Here is my daughter’s new day bed! I am so excited for this to be done. It was a $30 second hand find that was pretty, but the original dark wood just didn’t fit the bill for my baby’s big girl purple polka dotted room. I’ll share the steps to this project once I’m done. I really hope that’s soon because I’m on like my 87th coat of white paint.

And here’s my previously faux wood paneled linen closet in progress.

Organizers and the Closet Maid aisle in Home Depot make me really happy!!

Good Thing We Still Like ‘Em

Like I said a few posts ago (I know it’s been way too long…we’ve spent all our waking and free minutes at the house,) we purchase all our paint during a mega sale at Sherwin Williams last summer. Yes, one year ago. Of course, at the time we didn’t know we wouldn’t be cracking those cans open until now, but whatever. It was fun to open them up and still really like our choices. Good thing, because they were going on the walls no matter what.

For primer we use Olympic No-VOC primer that you can get at Lowes for a good price. I think it’s like $15 a gallon. They don’t have it in 5 gallon buckets, which is silly, so we just bought a cart load of one gallons. Hey, they’re easier to carry that way, right?

And our paint is all Sherwin Williams Harmony. We used this paint throughout our first house and were really happy with it. It’s a little on the pricey side, which is why we jumped at a store wide sale and got it all in one fell swoop. It covers nicely and is zero VOC (except for some added colorants.

So here’s a sneak peek at our color choices. We still have to add the moulding, hence the gaping while areas at the top of most walls. I also didn’t paint where cabinets will be, and left a very large margin of error for those areas. Lazy or brilliant? I vote for brilliant ;)

Grout Envy

Really, who wouldn’t love some pre-mixed, off the shelf wonder material that you could slather on and it would make you look all new and clean and fabulous?

Grout took on the task of hiding all the imperfections and missteps that this inexperienced tiler made in our two bathrooms and making me feel like I did a really good job!

Here’s the kids bath:

And ours:

And just wait until you see the wall color with the recycled glass tiles in our master bath. Oh my goodness-it’s like I have impeccable taste and am able to color match perfectly even while making sight unseen purchases over the internet. Yeah, something like that :) But really, it’s gorgeous! And lucky.

Drywall Complete!

Our walls are done! Our walls are done! It doesn’t even seem quite real.

We have been priming and painting like lunatics, so happy to finally be able to get some work done on our own :) It’s fabulous! Here’s our room all primed and ready to go:

Hubby and I have literally been painting in shifts…he gets up early, goes over and paints till the afternoon, then comes home to swim with the kids and I head over for my turn. I’m proud of us.

Next I’ll be sharing some pics of our paint color choices (which we made nearly a year ago when there was a really good sale at Sherwin Williams and we had no idea we wouldn’t be painting till July of ’11. Nothing a good paint stirrer can’t fix. Except for the fact that we apparently forgot to get some, so we’re using anything we can find to mix these dormant cans of paint up. But once they’re on the wall, it’s like seeing an old friend…like ‘hey! You’re pretty!’ So much fun!

DIY Recycled, Spiffed Up Shutters

Ok, this project is one that I am so excited about. I’ve been planning it for awhile now, and the front of our new house has been looking a little naked, so I am thrilled with the results a little elbow grease and spray paint had.

When we bought our house, the shutters looked like this:

Then we replaced the 2 left front windows and it looked like this:

Clearly, some work needed to be done.

I was able to re-use 2 sets of the existing shutters, but the last set was too short. I totally lucked out on ebay and found a pre-loved pair there for a mere $36! That was lots cheaper than other sets I had priced out at Home Depot and online, so I was very happy with that.

Manned with 3 cans of spray paint, new plastic shutter anchor thingies and my lovely mom who swam with the kids while I did all this, I wound up with this!!!:

First, I snipped off the old anchor thingies.

Then blasted them with the hose. I won’t even tell you what grossness lurked in the ones that had been on our house. The ebay ones were nice and clean.

While they dried I rigged this ingenious holder out of the ebay shutters box.

They were a little tricky to spray paint without drippage, but noone’s going to notice, right?

Then I sprayed the shutters and still have numb fingers to show for it.

Ahhh…such an easy and inexpensive project that ended in such huge rewards. Love it!

Yard Work

My lovely in-laws came and helped with a super ambitious day full of yard work and child entertaining :)

The prettiest planting of the day happened here:

My favorite accomplishment of the day is this HUGE new flower bed that I did *mostly* all by myself ;) This area used to look like this:

Then we decided to plant our new lilac bush in the general vicinity with the goal of extending the existing skinny minnie bed to include our new lovely plant. So while Meema kept the kids busy on the new (to us) swing set, I got to work digging out edging bricks that must have weighed 25 pounds each, digging a new trench for them to live in, laying out layers and layers of cardboard to control the weeds and covering it all up with mulch. Seriously, mulch rocks. Pretty, right?

Can you see that furniture up on the deck there? Well it’s new to us…thanks to a lovely person offering it for free on craigs*list! It needs tome TLC, but it’s all wood, so we should be able to repair the damaged areas. We plan to set it up on the grass near the swings, so the kids can always have an audience. Oh, and we’ll paint it too. My husband made sure of that as soon as he saw them in all their teal splendor.

And my hubby and his dad planted a loooong row of alternating rose of sharon and forsythia. They left a large area in the middle where our tiered, raised bed veggie garden will go for next year!!

We’re getting there! :)

When one door opens…

well…it means you have doors in your house!!!

Yay! :)

I am so, so excited about these doors that the hubby installed for us! I found a lot of 5 of them on ebay in a town not too far from where he works, so he was able to pick them up easily. One of the doors has water damage, so is unusable, but the other 4 are perfect and I believe I spent only $70 on all of them!

5 panel, solid wood vintage doors. Love them!

The one that’s for our little guy’s room was too short, so he extended it and once we get it all sanded and re-painted, it’ll look good as new. They add so much to the house-I love how they’re so solid and heavy.

Now we’re just trying to decide what to do about hardware. I have a lot of learning about mortise lock systems in my future.

My 5 year old thinks the doorknobs and keyholes are too cool…and that there is a “pirate key” floating around somewhere that will fit perfectly :)

Book Storage

As we’re getting closer and closer to moving in (I’m trying to sound optimistic…did it work?) I’m starting to worry about all of our STUFF.

On good days I’m really excited and viewing the move as the ultimate opportunity to go through every last little thing we own and only keep what we need and love.

On the other days, I’m freaking out that we’re going to overrun our lovely new house with massive amounts of junk lovely things.

One of the things that we have seemingly truckloads full of is books. We all love them and have a very hard time parting with them. We are so crazy thrilled that our 2 (almost 2 and a half! ACK!) year old has recently discovered a love for books. He picks his favorite (usually a Sandra Boynton jem) and brings it to us requesting “read!” and we just melt. His big sister is an avid reader and I am so happy that he seems to be following in her gorgeous footsteps.

Anyway. We gots a whole lotta books.

Here are some of my favorite ideas for storing them (click the pics for the links):

Ikea Spice Racks! Perfect for a narrow piece of wall.

Plate Rack! And you could swap out the string for some ribbon. Cute!

plate rack

and my all time favorite…these gorgeous picture ledges turned bookshelves! I want to put them everywhere!!

and I’m thinking we’ll pare down too. The other day I went to get something out of a drawer that I hadn’t opened in a long time and found a stealthily stashed Sesame Street book that is so mind numbingly long and emotional and brings up way too many deep questions right at bedtime that I just couldn’t read it one more time.

Weird how things get “lost”, huh?
